A CONTA Uma História Econômica do Brasil (1500–2026)
Synopsis
THE BILL — an economic history of Brazil, from 1500 to 2026.
From the first sugar mill to October 2026: where the country's bill came from, and who was left holding it. Across twelve reels, the documentary moves through every boom — sugar, gold, coffee, cheap foreign credit, commodities, oil — and always asks the same question: what was left when the wind turned, and who paid the bill.
HOW THE FILM MEASURES • No data from IBGE, Brazil's official statistics bureau: no GDP, no official inflation index (IPCA), no census. Instead, what the economy leaves on record as it happens — electricity used, steel poured, cars built, grain harvested, ships loaded, taxes paid. • Two independent inflation yardsticks, Fipe's consumer price index (IPC) and FGV's IGP-DI. When they disagree, the film shows both and the gap between them. • Every number appears with its source on screen — 99 sources across the film. • The same yardstick for every government: what it inherited, what came from abroad, what it decided, what can be measured. • Estimates appear as ranges; scenarios ("what if…") are marked as specimens, with no value as fact. • Projections hold as of the date they were made. The 2026 election appears with its dates only, no forecast.
The film is narrated in Portuguese; on-screen text is in Portuguese.
